Guys in Ties Kickstart The Kids Appeal
The Guys in Ties for ABI was held at The Pier Geelong on the 25th August to raise funds for the recently launched campaign of the Barwon Health Foundation - The Kids Appeal.
The Kids Appeal is a $3 million, community funded development of a purpose-built paediatric rehabiliation centre at the McKellar Centre. The state-of-the-art centre will include a gym, consulting rooms, a therapy kitchen, playground and private treatment rooms.
Currently paediatric and youth rehab patients are treated in the Community Rehabiliation Centre at the McKellar Centre, which has been designed for adults. To be able to tailor programs to each child and family's specific needs, Geelong needs a rehabilitation facility for children and youth.
Guys in Ties for ABI organiser, Pat Walsh knows first hand just how important having a functional rehabilitation centre close to home is. Pat was involved in a serious road accident 11 years ago, aged 23.
Pat sustained many injuries and broken bones, but the lasting effect is an ABI (Acquired Brain Injury). Following months of operations and treatment in hospital Pat began the process of rehabilitation at the McKellar Centre.
Health and fitness was a huge part of Pat's recovery and is where the Guys in Ties for ABI fundraiser came about. Pat, along with a few of his gym buddies put together the night filled with humour and fun whilst delivering an important message and raising much needed funds for The Kids Project.
Surpassing their original target of $10,000 the Guys in Ties for ABI fundraiser raised an amazing $15,800 to kick start the fundraising for this important community project.
Well done to Pat, his biggest support person, Mum Kath and all involved for putting together an amazing event!
